Choosing your puppy!
Here at 24K Goldens, we have developed a system that works
well for everyone for choosing puppies.
All puppies in the litter are evaluated for show quality. This is conducted by a show judge (who is a friend of mine). Having it done by someone else allows for greater objectivity.
Each puppy is put on a table one at a time. the following are some of the areas evaluated and discussed.
- Return of upper arm
- Length of neck
- Length and angle of shoulder
- Depth and spring of rib cage
- Length of loin
- Tail set
- Length of hocks
- Width of chest
- Width of head
- Length of ears
To have a properly balanced puppy these things must be in the right proportions.
For a puppy to be show quality it must meet the breed standard. Proper parts at proper angles are important, so the golden retriever can do the job it is bred for: retrieving game in the field. Something as minor as the tail set being too high or too low will disqualify a puppy from being “show quality”.
After the evaluation is done the puppies are put on the ground. we watch them gait. Then we may go back and reevaluate certain pups again. This process takes the better part of a day.
At this time we decide what we are keeping for the show ring if any. If all the puppies from the litter are not sold we will keep the pick female and male.
We will help you choose your puppy, by letting you know personality traits, energy level, etc, but you have the final say and you get to choose your puppy.
If you would like to know where your puppy came in on the evaluation, please feel free to ask. This evaluation process is one reason why we ask so many questions about you and your family. We take extra care and go the extra mile to match the right puppy with the right family.
You get to choose your puppy in the order that your deposit was received.
